The coworking industry has garnered popularity since its inception but the demand increases with the rise of small businesses flex-office workers, who are the main clients of coworking spaces all over the world.
Our international analysis includes market insights and helpful information about shared spaces that we hope will benefit you and your business. September's list is packed with added information, statistics and fresh insights.
Here's how we categorize the coworking spaces:
- New spaces: Indicates brand-new businesses.
- Expansions: Indicates companies opening their second location or more.
- Chains: Indicates coworking franchises.
We have also included figures and analysis on each new opening to give you a clear idea of what’s happening in the coworking industry.
Overview
This month, there are 234 new openings and 58.6 percent of them are new businesses entering the market. This is a strong indication of a steady, rising coworking trend. If we compare these statistics to August, the numbers are quite similar; surprisingly, this shows that more than half of the new spaces opened each month are new businesses. Aside from big players, like WeWork, the coworking industry is clearly powered by small, independent business owners, many of whom are entering the market for the first time.
Our research also highlights 65 businesses that have successfully established their initial coworking space and have now graduated to scaling their business in multiple locations.
The remaining 12.8 percent are large coworking chains such as WeWork and Industrious Office who continue to expand their franchises all over the world.
Coworking Trends in the United States
There are 106 announced openings in the U.S, a 14 percent increase compared to last month and a steady increase over time, according to previous statistics. Openings in the U.S. made up almost half of all new openings in September in these states:
- California: 13 new spaces
- Texas: 12 new spaces, four more than last month.
- New York: 12 new spaces, twice that of last month.
While coworking has become a global phenomenon, the U.S. continues to lead the pack with 45.8 percent of September openings. Other noteworthy states include Massachusetts with eight new openings and Florida with five new openings, a testament to the spreading influence of coworking beyond major cities.
International Coworking Trends
There are 31 openings in the United Kingdom in September, almost double that of the last month. Out of these, only 10 are in London and the rest opened in less populated areas, such as Swansea and Gosforth. This shows how widely coworking has expanded in just one month alone.
On the other side of the globe, India takes 16 spots from the new Asian coworking openings, followed by Indonesia.
As businesses continue to climb the curve, it's clear that coworking will continue to rise in the coming years.
